Tyler Chatten of Erie, CO, bought several strands of our colorful paper beads from another mother in the parking lot as she dropped her kids off at school one day. Inspired by the story behind the product, she immediately thought of BeadforLife as the perfect monthly service project for her ThornCreek Church MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) and MOMSnext groups.
MOPS began with a small group in Colorado nearly 40 years ago. With regular meetings, they found a solution to the isolation that some mothers felt. MOPS has grown into an international organization that supports mothers everywhere “through friendship, creative outlets and instruction.” Tyler explains, “We work hard to raise our children and be the best moms we can be. We also love to be involved in local, national and international service projects.”
BeadforLife started seven years ago in much the same way – in a living room after a mother, daughter and friend had returned from Uganda. Our organization also found a solution to a problem many women in Uganda experienced, which is extreme poverty. Our entrepreneurial training program specifically helps mothers in Uganda to become self-sufficient and empowers them to lift their families out of extreme poverty. As Tyler discovered, mothers can help mothers a world away by partnering with BeadforLife to host a BeadParty.
Tyler suggests these tips for a very successful MOPS BeadParty:
Take your event a step further by inviting someone from Uganda or Africa to participate
“I met Gershom Mulati and his wife when they joined our church last fall. I knew he was raised in Uganda by a single mom and that we could learn more about what life is like in Uganda. Having him share his experiences made our program even more meaningful.”
Preview the product
“Our Steering Committee bought the beads first and wore them for a week to generate awareness and excitement around the community. “
Offer more than one buying opportunity
“We followed up the MOPS meeting with a table after church so that moms who were unable to attend still had a chance to buy, along with the wider church community.”
Have beads, will travel
“I wear lots of beads at once and everywhere I go people admire them. I always tell people they are for sale and I have sold many pieces that way.”
BeadforLife will also be attending the MOPS Convention in Grapevine, TX, August 9-11, 2012 and invites you to stop by and see us there!
