The Etana necklace, a name meaning strength in Swahili, is made exclusively by Favour; they are the 14th group of Beadforlife beaders. The name signifies the courage and strength of will that it takes to pull yourself and your family out of the cycle of poverty. The Favour group are a hard working and lively group of women who love to sing and dance. Irene, BeadforLife’s membership coordinator laughs and says, “They love to sing so much they could make another BeadforLife CD!” The women come from 4 major slums in the outskirts of Kampala, and for years have been isolated by poverty and hardship.
One of the greatest benefits they have gained from BeadforLife is the support and companionship of other women. Nakijoba Annette says that she likes the women she works with in Favour because they share everything. They do business together; they roll beads together. They all work very hard.
The women of Favour selected their name because “it means good things.” Abigaba Vicky says that to her the name represents “love and peace. When there is a problem Favour can assist.”
The Favour group were enrolled in BeadforLife in November 2012, and are anxiously waiting to hear the reaction from our supporters in North America, Europe and the rest of the world.
Ndagire Florence would like to thank the women who choose to buy her jewelry. “You’re doing a great thing buying our necklaces. Because you buy them we’re able to be here at BeadforLife!”
